Repair or Replace? How to Know Which to Choose

One of the most important appliances in your home is the water heater. But like any other appliance in your home, sometimes it will break down. When it happens, there is something you have to decide and that is if you’re going to repair or replace your hot water heater.

Here are some tips to help you decide which is the right one.

    Think About Its Age

The first thing to consider is the water heater’s age. Have you had it for a while or is it fairly new? It’s possible that if it’s new that it’s still under warranty. But if it’s at least 8 years old, it’s best to just replace it. The problem you’re having might just be the start.

Determine if It can be Repaired

Even though a lot of the parts on the water heaters are replaceable, sometimes it’s not an option. If it’s the heater’s storage tank, this can’t be replaced since it’s due to corrosion. After it’s been compromised, you can’t repair it.

If you want to keep it going for as long as possible, you should have your tank periodically flushed. This will remove sediment which can cause your tank to become corroded.

    Ask If Repairing Worth It

Sometimes the price of the repair isn’t worth it. Not only the repair price might be expensive but depending on the age of the water heater, a new one’s efficiency might be a much better choice since it won’t cost as much to run.

Many people are going to the tankless models. These models conserve energy by heating the water as it’s needed. Therefore, there’s no energy wasted by constantly heating the tank.

    Have the Pipes Been Inspected?

Your water heater has been connected to both cold and hot water pipes. Prior to calling someone for your water heater, examine the pipes to make sure they’re not leaking.

If those pipes are the source of the problem, usually you’ll find your leak at their elbow joints. This is where the pipes are cut and then sealed when it was installed. It could be that you’ll just a plumber to reseal them.

    Conclusion

When you don’t know whether you should replace or repair the water heater, it’s a smart to contact a contractor to help you with making the choice that is best.

    Hiring a Pro

Many plumbing issues might seem like an easy fix for DIY homeowners, but often there are jobs that should be left to the professionals. Sometimes an easy and cheap fix can be complicated by somebody who does not have certified training.

Don’t turn a cheap fix into a real problem by trying to do things yourself.
