4 Signs You May Have a Broken Water Heater

    April 21, 2016

    Fix Hot Water Heater
Have you ever turned on your shower, only to have the water burn you?

On the other hand you might hop into the shower only to feel shocked by an icy stream of water from your shower nozzle. Or being stuck in a tepid shower that is never hot enough is the worst!

As a home owner what are you going to do? Regular maintenance is the best, but depending on your specific situation, there might be a couple of different solutions, all of which can be repaired by your friendly SW Florida plumbers at Titanz Plumbing.

Before you begin inspecting your water heater you should determine a few things first.

    1. Electrical or gas: If you live in Southwest Florida its pretty common to have an electric water heater in your home.
    2. Type of water heater: Do you have a water heater with a tank or a tankless instant hot water heater?
    3. Age of water heater: Like everything, hot water heaters have a a shelf life depending on frequency of use and quality of product.
    4. Check for warranty: If your water heater is new its possible you are under some sort of warranty.
    5. Water heater brand: Often companies like Rheem have local specialists that can more effectively fix their products.

    1. Water Heater Temperature Gauge

There is a good chance this is either set incorrectly. If it is too hot, your best guess is the gauge is far beyond the normal level. If it is too cold, it might be set too low.

Now, you can adjust the dial setting yourself. However, make sure to follow the instructions listed on the water heater. If there are none or if it doesn’t change the temperature of your water heater, you need to bring in the pros.

    2. Damaged Heating Element

There is an electric heating element inside of your water heater that controls the heat. If you check your water heater the heating element should always be on. If it is off you have one of two problems. One, it might have just gone out.

That happens from time to time. However, if it stays off after resetting than you have another problem. More likely than not it is because you have a damaged element that is not holding a current. This is not something you should attempt to change on your own. Whenever it comes to your water heater and a electrical heating element, it is better to be safe than sorry.

    3. Pipe Insulation Problems

So, perhaps your water heater is acting just fine and heating the water to the proper temperature but it is reaching your shower or faucets too cold. Why does this happen? It is usually because of the water cooling off while running through your pipes.

Depending on the age of your pipes and the condition the plumbing is in, there is a chance the temperature cools off far too much before it reaches the correct outlet. In order to correct this Titanz Plumbing can install insulation around the pipes. This keeps the water the correct temperature while reducing your energy bills.

    4. Tripped Circuit

Electric water heaters can pop fuzes too! If your water heater recently, and unexpectedly stopped working, check your electric panel to see if the fuze tripped. If the fuze switch is in the off position try flipping it back on. Though if you feel uncomfortable doing this, you should call a professional plumber to access the situation.

Every home owner will at one time in their life have to deal with their hot water heater. The tips we mentioned are just a fraction of the work and experience involved in repairing, maintaining and replacing hot water heaters in Charlotte and Lee County Florida.

If you are in the process of researching your hot water heater, don’t be afraid to ask for a second opinion.

    Hiring a Pro

Many plumbing issues might seem like an easy fix for DIY homeowners, but often there are jobs that should be left to the professionals. Sometimes an easy and cheap fix can be complicated by somebody who does not have certified training.

Don’t turn a cheap fix into a real problem by trying to do things yourself.
