4 Ways to Unclog Your Shower Drain

    October 12, 2017

Your shower drain is clogged. The water isn’t going down when you take a shower or when you give your little one a bath. Now what do you do? You could call a plumber, but they can be really expensive. Fortunately, there are things that you can do on your own to unclog your shower drain. Below are some easy tips.

    1. Use Your plunger

A plunger isn’t just for your toilet. It can also be used for unclogging the drains in your tub or shower. Remove your drain cover, put your plunger over your drain and allow your shower to run so that the plunger’s rubber portion is under water. Then pump your plunger up and down to see if the clog can be dislodged. It’s a good idea to have two plungers, one for the toilet and one for your drains.

    2. Snake Your Drain

This is another great way that you can tackle your clogged shower. Quality drain snakes can be bought from a hardware store. Feed your snake slowly down into the drain until you’re feeling a bit of resistance and then wind your snake around your drain to break your clog up. If you don’t want to buy a snake, you can always use a bent metal hanger. If you’re choosing this method, try fishing your clog out. You won’t have the ability to break up your blockage. You might simply push it farther down your drain.

    3. Use Liquid Cleaner for Drains

There are a lot of drain cleaners that you can buy to help with removing clogs. It’s a good idea to speak with a plumber to find out which is going to be best for your home’s plumbing system.

    4. Put the Kettle On

If you aren’t comfortable with using a chemical cleaner, there are things that you can do that are natural that could work. Try pouring some boiling water carefully down your drain and this could work to break up your clog. If you’re finding this doesn’t work, you can mix one-third cup baking soda and one-third cup vinegar and see if that works.

If you’ve tried all of these methods and they’re not working, it may be time to bring in a plumber. They’ll have the expertise, experience and tools that are needed for finding the cause of the clog and clearing your drain. Remember the best way that you can help clogs is by preventing them. Use the strainer to catch hair and make sure that you wipe out the tub anytime you shower or take a bath so that stray hairs are caught before going down your drain. This will help you avoid clogs.
