Five Tips To Avoid Holiday Plumbing Disasters

Did you know that the busiest day of the year for plumbers is the day after Thanksgiving?

This holiday season you may have multiple guest over for dinner, a large Thanksgiving dinner party, or out of town family and friends who come to stay for an extended period of time. Sometimes these visitors can cause plumbing disasters because they are not use to your home or appliances.

One typically abused residential plumbing device during the holidays is the garbage disposal. If one of your visitors does not have a garbage disposal they might this its the catch all trash can…but its not. Clearly, much of it belongs elsewhere, i.e., in the trash.

Handymen and plumbers receive the highest number of service requests for backed-up and clogged drains during November. The cost of hiring a plumber to repair the garbage disposal and unclog the drain can be hundreds of dollars.

Five tips to avoid holiday plumbing disasters:

Homeowners can prevent costly repairs by taking a few simple precautions when preparing their holiday meals.

    1. Never throw: corn husks, coffee grounds, grease, bones, potato skins, egg shells, or lettuce into the garbage disposal.
    2. Don’t: overload the garbage disposal: throw food waste a little at a time down the drain.
    3. Always:  run cold water when throwing items into the disposal.
    4. Clean it: use a garbage disposer cleaner to degrease the pipes.
    5. Maintenance: Complete the following garbage disposal maintenance every three months:

    • Throw ice down the disposal to sharpen the blades
    • Toss lemon and orange peels down the disposal to prevent odors

Bonus Tip – Know Your Plumbing: As a homeowner you should know the plumbing throughout your house. Educate yourself on where the water shut-off valves are located. This is essential information when you have a plumbing emergency.
