    Main Sewer Clogs

    May 21, 2019

A main sewer clog is one of the most serious plumbing problems you can experience, as every fixture, pipe, and drain in your home is connected to the main line.

Over time, the main sewer line can fail, such as the result of a clog or collapse. The most common causes of a clogged sewer line include:

    • Flushing debris down the toilet: There are things you can and can’t flush down your toilet. Knowing the difference is critical to keeping your plumbing system, especially the main sewer line, in good working condition.
    • Pipe damage: Common causes of damage include tree roots, leaking joints, corrosion, and rupture.
    • Sagging sewer line: As ground or soil conditions change, it’s possible your main sewer line could begin to sag. The low spot has the potential to collect waste, thus resulting in a clog.
    • Disposing of grease in your kitchen sink: It may be convenient, but hot grease can solidify in your main sewer line (as well as the pipes leading to it).

    Warning Signs

It’s not always easy to pinpoint a main sewer clog, as it’s located below the surface outside your home. Some of the most common warning signs of a clog include:

    • Regular backups of a drain or drains
    • Clogs at multiple fixtures, such as your shower and tub drain
    • Bubbling toilet water
    • Changes to your lawn, such as a soggy patch of grass
